Erdrich: The Round House

Louise Erdrich’s award-winning The Round House

I found the characters circled tightly around Joe aka Oops, the thirteen-year old protagonist to be wonderfully human—quirky, natural, comfortable in their own skin. Like Joe who narrates, they are story-tellers, and their dialogue gives them their credibility and humanity, both. The fictional dialogue inspired me, the non-fiction writer, and there I was, unexpectedly developing a lengthy dialogue between an audiologist, social worker, and fiction editor to open Chapter IV of The Question of Empathy. I hope it works half as well as any one of Erdrich’s many.
